Fair Trade
Depot Artspace and Edmund Rice Justice Aotearoa
“52cents is a number that has stuck in my mind for many years as it was the figure that Timorese farmers were paid for a kilogram of coffee whilst I was working in the Railako district.” Sam Drumm - Edmund Rice Social Justice Co-Ordinator.
The Depot decided to become a Fair Trade Workplace in August 2007. As an arts community with inclusiveness as the cornerstone of its philosophy Fair Trades values resonated with our own by ensuring that farmers and workers in the developing world are included in the cycle of sustainability. As part of our continued support and involvement we have partnered up with Edmund Rice Justice Aotearoa to bring an exhibition together.
Fair-trade is a movement that has tried to address this issue with a gradual movement to a stable strong price and ongoing support of development in coffee, tea, cocoa and many other farming communities in the majority world.
With the movement to the super city a group of dedicated citizens will be putting pressure on the new council to make Auckland a certified fair-trade city. We hope the exhibition will provide you with an insight into the life of the majority of the world’s farmers and an understanding of just how important standards like fair-trade are for the world’s poorest.
